The best way to learn photography fast: Spend a holiday on location learning with a photo pro. Unfortunately underwater photography is not very lucrative on its own so most of your favorite photographers on Instagram also teach underwater photography. Even if they don't advertise it they will be honored that you would even ask, so don't be afraid to message them and inquire. If they don't personally teach photo courses they might be able to point you in the direction of someone they respect or even the person who in fact trained them. The courses will always be catered to you personally and typically consist of theory in the class, application in the water, then a review of your work for the day. Doing this over multiple days is invaluable and the best way to learn not only shooting but how best to use and maintain your camera as well as diving techniques. You will get personal attention and critique from someone with real life experience and even better: someone whose style you really like With all of this being said the best and only way to learn and get better is to keep practicing.

The compact, rugged technology of the GoPro has created incredible opportunities for capturing the action of events like these. And while the GoPro is known mostly for its video capabilities, improved senor technology means it's also a camera capable of high-quality imagery that can withstand harsh conditions such as water and dust. And being able to shoot in adverse conditions opens new opportunities for creative photography. In the past few months I've been experimenting with a GoPro Hero5 to shoot underwater photography. Although shooting underwater is a new realm for me, I've found that by applying generic photography knowledge I've grown quickly and made the GoPro work for me. As we begin to "stop down" or increase the f-stop number, the aperture begins to get smaller but creates a greater depth of field and less light. Notice the background color in this image. Shooting at a slower shutter speed allows more ambient light in because the shutter is closing slower. The background becomes darker or even black when we increase the shutter speed. Having the shutter speed set at the fastest synch speed that your strobes and camera will allow for is a simple way to streamline your choices underwater. This also helps get rid of the funky ambient light in the background. We measure shutter speed in timed divisions of a second's effects on the ambient light in our image and movement. Shutter speeds greater than 1/125 are usually enough to black out the light, but I prefer to shoot at around 1/200. ISO amplifies all incoming light, which is helpful when you want to retain your settings but need more light. Occasionally you cannot light a subject properly with ordinary strobe angles.
