Some random points I have in mind: it will be my first car I think I can quite comfortably spend up to £10k (probably will get a personal loan just to avoid getting into the rainy day fund too much. Monthly budget of up to £400 is fine, especially given that I'll get some money back selling it) I live and work in London Z1, so I don't need a car for commute. There are two reasons why I want a car: 1) to learn to drive one, rental is unreasonable for getting those ass-in-the-seat hours 2) to go out travelling/camping across the UK and maybe Europe. I might do some shopping and commute from time to time, but that's pretty occasional (might do it on purpose to learn, though) I might want to transport a sea kayak, so being able to install roof racks is pretty important it's just me and my partner, so theoretically two-seater might work, but the only one in the price range is Miata which can't take roof racks (which is a shame, it looks like a really fun car) I don't mind driving manual. According to my searches, automatic adds about £1-2k to the price and I'm not sure it worth it, I'm comfortable with the stick I will probably sell the car in 2-3 years (either to upgrade, or because I'll be happy enough with my skills) I'll feel pretty guilty about all the pollution thing, so the higher mpg (especially highway one) the better.
